Madagascar – the fourth largest island in the world, kept secret on the east coast of Africa

Madagascar is about 800 kilometers east of Mozambique, off the southeast coast of the African continent. Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo, Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and about one and a half times as large as Germany.
13.7 million people from 18 different tribes inhabit the island, of which one million live in the capital, Tana (Antananarivo).
The island is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is the one of hard bedrock, such as basalt and granite, on the other of volcanically formed islands (Nosy Be, Comoros) and landscapes (mountains around Antsirabé).

The flora and fauna of Madagascar is endemic to 80 percent by the isolated location of the island have evolved largely independent ways. To the west the central highlands is terraced up from the coast. Large areas are almost deserted and overgrown with tall grass. The coast is rugged and full of small coves, many uninhabited islands, some are offshore.

Culture
